Evaluation of the European Action Plan for Organic Food and Farming

In June 2004 the European Commission released the European Action Plan for Organic Food and Farming. With this action plan the Commission intends to assess the situation of organic farming and to lay down the basis for policy development in the coming years. The plan will thus provide an overall strategic vision for the contribution of organic farming to the Common Agricultural Policy.

The European funded research project ORGAP* gives scientific support for the implementation of the European Action Plan, and it will assess its long-term and short-term effects.

The project will

  • Develop a toolbox to evaluate and monitor the implementation of the European Action Plan in the following areas: information, training and education, research, production, processing, market development, certification, public expenditures. Workpackage 2
  • Test the toolbox on a selected existing national action plans. Workpackage 3
  • Identify conflict areas between targets of European and national action plans. Workpackage 3
  • Analyse the implementation processes and procedures. Workpackage 4
  • Make policy recommendation to the European Commission, national authorities as well as further actors. Workpackage 5

The work will be carried out in seven work packages of the project.

Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007

In June 2007 the EU Council has adopted the Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 of 28 June 2007 on organic production and labelling of organic products and repealing Regulation (EEC) No 2092/91. This regulation will be put in force in 2009. Currently the EU Commission is working on the implementing rules.

Results from ORGAP Project presented at BioFach

At BioFach, the World biggest organic fair in Nürnberg (Germany) results from ORGAP Project have been presented in a special session on the 21st of February 2008.
